Selling Your Car to a Dealership

Thursday, January 20th, 2011

Selling to a dealer is actually less stressful than selling to private individuals. This is simple because that the dealer will do most of the work. Selling to a dealer means going to as many dealership as possible. Make sure that you are aware of the trade-in value of your vehicle. Some dealers will try to make you incredibly low offers and you may get ripped off if you do not the approximate value of your car. When you visit each dealership, speak to an authoritative member of staff. Ask what their policy on the sale and trade-in of used cars is, as this changes from place to place.

Make sure that each dealership gives you an independent appraisal. The dealer will make the appraisal before agreeing to haggle on the price with you. If your car has any problems then expect low offers from the dealerships. When you sell a car, an honest opinion is very important and you should insist on it before agreeing on any sales. On your part be as honest as possible when you approach the dealer. Trying to cover up any problems with the car, which become evident during appraisal, will significantly reduce the offer you get than if you had come clean in the first place.

Do compare the prices of various dealerships. After visiting several dealers you will have a list of offers to compare and choose from. Which one best suits your needs? Ensure that all the terms that you have agreed on with the dealer are put down on paper, and then go through it carefully before you append your signature to it. Remember that once you sign the agreement, the car is sold. A word of caution; failure to disclose any problems when you sell your car can lead to the dealer voiding the sale under the laws of most states. Keep it in mind to disclose any engine or other structural problems to the dealer.
