The Benefits of Model Car Clubs

Tuesday, December 29th, 2009

If you are joining a die cast model car club you will probably want to join one that deals with certain collections. Certain “Mint” collections will offer a selection of different cars based on a common factor, whether it be manufacturer of the original automobile or the year range that particular auto came out. These collector’s club usually charge a set amount for each vehicle you purchase and then they will add in shipping. Sometimes as an incentive they will offer some sort of freebie gift to try and convince you to join.

If you do not mind paying a bit of money and are looking for a certain type of model car then this can be an okay way to go. You know you will get your car at a certain time each month and you know what it will cost you. The downside is that many of these collections do not usually gain in value. They are purely for the collector’s personal enjoyment. Another is that if there is a month that you are not able to afford one of the cars or you do not like the one being offered then you may still have to purchase it. If you do not then what value you do have in the collection can drop significantly.

If you love to build models then there is a whole other avenue of options available to you as well. Many of the clubs for builders offer free memberships and have a lot more to offer as well. You can talk to fellow club members and get plenty of tips and hints on ways to improve your model making skills. You can also learn where to find hard to get models and paints. Model building clubs can be very interesting in that they are a very good way to meet people from all over the world that share a common interest with you.

There are also some pay per membership clubs out there for model builders as well. Some of these may resemble an “of the month” type club. Offering a different model car each month they will send you the build kit and you may have to purchase your paints separately. It may take a bit of searching to find one of these but with a little time and some Internet hunting you should be able to find the one you would like to join. Model car clubs are an interesting way to meet people no matter if you want to build your own or just collect die cast ones. All you have to do is find the one that makes you feel the most welcome.

What You Need to Know about Road Safety

Monday, December 21st, 2009

Road safety is everyone’s concern, though many people aren’t even sure of what it means. This simple phrase covers a lot of areas, all of which involve staying safe and being responsible on the road. It applies to everyone who drives, cycles or even walks and the idea is to keep everyone out of harm’s way.

Drinking

Drunk driving causes over 13,000 deaths every year, but most people still think nothing of having a couple of beers before hitting the road. Unfortunately, even if you don’t feel drunk, your reflexes are impaired and even a few seconds difference can cause death when dealing with a motor vehicle.

While there are laws against drinking and driving, it still lies in the hands of the people to stop this problem. If you’re going to go out partying, assign a designated driver or call a taxi to get home safely. And don’t let others who have been drinking get into the driver’s seat.

Novice Drivers

New drivers are a high risk category. While everyone makes mistakes sometimes, some of those errors can be deadly. With this in mind, new laws have been passed in many states to help new drivers learn to drive safely. Extended learning periods, minimum required driving times and requiring new drivers to be accompanied by an older driver are all methods of keeping the roads secure while young people learn the ropes.

Alertness

After you’ve been driving for a while, it’s easy to get complacent, especially if you are very familiar with the route you’re taking. Did you know that the majority of accidents take place within a few minutes from home? People are familiar with their neighborhood, so they tend not to pay as much attention as they ought to, with tragic results.

Road safety means paying attention and being alert. Stop completely at stop signs, pay attention to the lights and keep an eye out for the unexpected. It`s also important to wear a seat belt and to strap children into their car seats, even if you’re just popping down the street for a moment. It only takes a second for everything to change and you want to be prepared as well as have roadside assistance protection.

Motorbikes and Bicycles

Of course, road safety isn’t only in the hands of those who drive heavier vehicles. Motorbikes are particularly dangerous to the rider because of the lack of protection. While a motorbike may not do nearly as much damage to a car as another vehicle might, these types of accidents have the highest rate of mortality. The safety factors can be boosted by using appropriate protective gear, driving responsibly and keeping the bike in good shape.
